Rei’s role in this game is woefully small, but I’m glad they still included her in some of these beautiful pictures. The image of Asuka in the upper left corner is pretty cute, but what’s with the one in the lower left? She looks like she’s going to bite her tongue off! Gah!Īfter that is a small relationship chart, and then an Illustrations Gallery devoted to some really nice promotional art. For example, here’s a small portion of the Asuka faces: The book starts off with an illustrated guide to the characters, and then a couple of “Faces” pages that show some of the emotions displayed by various characters in the game.

This book is not available in English or French (which is not surprising because the game never got an official English or French release), but it has plenty of illustrations… mostly full color promotional art and screenshots, and there are some black-and-white sketches as well. She has two fellow pilots named Keita and Musashi, but the fandom doesn’t seem to talk about them as much. In Girlfriend of Steel, she is a new classmate and love interest for Shinji, however she is also a pilot for some kind of giant robot and is trying to get information on how the Evas work. Probably the most famous thing about this game is that it introduced Mana Kirishima, a character who apparently became popular enough to appear in a few more Evangelion spin-offs such as The Shinji Ikari Raising Project video game (and its manga adaptation), and the Petit Eva manga.

This game seems to take place sometime during the first half of the Evangelion TV series (my guess is around episode 11 or 12, because Unit-00 has the new blue color scheme but the Pribnow Box hasn’t been flooded yet). It’s a guide to Girlfriend of Steel, a “visual novel” that was originally a computer game but later became available for several video game consoles as well. For my forty-fourth Evangelion book review, here is Shin Seiki Evangelion Koutetsu no Girlfriend Visual Book (Neon Genesis Evangelion Girlfriend of Steel Visual Book), published by Kadokawa Shoten.
